PFD - Personal Floating Device

A personal flotation device (abbreviated as PFD; also referred to as, lifejacket, life preserver, etc.) is a device designed to assist a wearer, either conscious or unconscious, to keep afloat with his or her mouth and nose (airway) of his or her head's face above the water surface when in or on water.

Coast Guard Requirements:
  • All boaters must carry PFD for each person aboard, and it must be in serviceable condition and easily within reach.
  • The PFD must be Coast Guard approved. Read the label of the life jacket carefully before purchasing. If it does not say “Coast Guard Approved,” the PFD does not meet the minimum requirements.

NOCP boats carry Coast Guard approved PFD for each boater. Good floating condition and easily within reach when emergency occurs. However, the type of flotation may not be a very comfortable fit as an all-day-fishing vest for most of the boaters. NOCP recommends boaters to provide their own Coast Guard approved PFD of their choice which boaters would comfortably wear while fishing. (For most boaters a comfortable lifejacket is comfortable enough to wear a rain gear over it.) PFDs can also be purchased at Kodiak Walmart and at sporting stores in Kodiak.

Please watch Alaskan ads on the promotion of wearing lifejackets:
